What is the Hispanic Council?
One of Conexión Américas' guiding values is the belief that, in order to achieve true social change, people affected by a problem should be at the center of any efforts aimed at designing solutions. In 2003 we established the Hispanic Council as a mechanism through which we nurture grassroots leaders among the low- and moderate-income Latino immigrants in Middle Tennessee served by our organization.
Today, the Hispanic Council is comprised of 11 Hispanic immigrants who have sustained their volunteer commitment for several years; many of them are founding members and have given their time and talents since the beginning of Conexión Américas.
All members of the Hispanic Council are individuals who have benefited from Conexión Américas’ services in one way or another and have demonstrated commitment to give back to the organization and to the larger community that has welcomed them and their families. All of them are immigrants from Latin America who have experienced firsthand the challenges of leaving their native countries and arriving in a new community that speaks a different language and that has different laws and a different way of life. They also share the same dreams and aspirations for a better quality of life for themselves and their families.
