In May 2022, Conexión Américas celebrated twenty years of creating a welcoming community where Latino families can belong, contribute and succeed. In honor of this milestone, this community photo exhibition showcases ‘Then and Now’ portraits of Latinx families in Nashville, reflecting the growth and change over the past 20 years for Conexión Américas, Nashville and the city’s immigrant population.

Featured are the portraits and stories of 20 families with origins in seven Latin American countries and the United States. Through the exhibition, these individuals and families have reflected on their pasts, presents and futures, sharing not only their unique stories but also a snapshot of their past in the form of photos from around 20 years ago, which are displayed next to portraits taken in 2022 by professional photographer Cesar Virto.

The captions accompanying each family portrait are the participants’ responses to the questions: Where were you 20 years ago? How did you get from where you were then, to now? What accomplishment are you most proud of over the last 20 years? Where do you imagine yourself and your family 20 years from now?

Through the exhibition, we have the privilege of experiencing a small part of each family’s story. We learn of families who arrived in Nashville over 20 years ago and of others that made Nashville their home more recently. We see the complex identities of multigenerational families, spanning from newborns, teens to abuelos. We see people who have contributed to our community in every way – through journalism, landscaping, entertainment, construction, music, business, health, law enforcement and much more. We witness stories of love and strength. We miss those who are absent. We hear the dreams of what a better education for our children means and the joy of discovering a welcoming community. We learn of the relentless persistence and courage behind the espíritu emprendedor.

As you pass through this exhibit, we invite you to join us in reflecting on your own journey over the past 20 years. What do you imagine the next 20 years will look like for your family and for our community?

This exhibition is a project of Conexión Américas made possible thanks to funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission and our 20th Anniversary Sponsors. Many thanks to the generosity of the families who participated in the ‘Then and Now’ project, sharing their stories and making this exhibition possible.

** The captions used in the exhibition have been taken directly from surveys and interviews with project participants. They have been edited for length and clarity. Quotes appear in the original language used by the participants

20 years ago I was still in Argentina. Moving to the United States was very hard because even though I spoke a little bit of English it was just so different. At the time when I moved here there weren’t a lot of Latinos.

Setting up goals for myself and by God’s mercy. I always wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. After moving here and working against human trafficking this is what I decided to do because I saw the need for female bilingual officers. I remember the very first time that I left Franklin was to come to this area to do some immigration paperwork and it looked completely different back then to what it looks like now.

I later became the International Sales Director for the company. I graduated from university. Johan was in Costa Rica at that moment.

A lot of personal and professional growth and reaping successes.

Having a successful business and beautiful family.

Mucho crecimiento personal, profesional y cosechando muchos éxitos. We met in Georgia 18 years ago. We started working together and moved to Nashville and started a business here. When we moved to Nashville there were not many Latinos around. We were always looking for Latinos. We were growing with the community. We knew about Conexión Américas about 2 years after moving. It’s been interesting navigating the school system. It’s just been very different from how we grew up. Sometimes you feel like you don’t have all the answers. We are now part of the Latinos that are really immersed in the culture and we try to keep our essence through culture, food and history.

Incluso, pude mudarme a Nashville y encontrar a Conexión Américas.

Let’s talk about the photo from 20 years ago.  Where were you (all)? What events were happening during this time period of your life?

It was the first time that we could be together, after we all came to the United States (we arrived on different dates and places) . We were in Connecticut for a long time.  Although it was a cold region, I loved the country and decided to stay. The transition and adaptation of the language and culture was a bit difficult, however I had the hope to establish myself as a citizen of this country.  Even though I had completed  my education in Colombia, I could not pursue my career, so I worked in various jobs.  Since then, I have been able to improve my level of lifestyle.

Let’s talk about the present. What does it look like today? How have the last 20 years gone by to now?

Financial difficulties and in language that we have been able to overcome throughout the years with persistence, optimism and a lot of faith.  Additionally, I was able to move to  Nashville and find Conexiòn Américas. I am very happy , especially seeing how many immigrant families  emigrate to a new country and to know that there are organizations that help these families.

What  personal or family achievements have you (all) obtained during these last 20 years?

My three children came very young and have pursued different careers. They are now totally independent people who have now formed their own families.

I foresee myself with more grandchildren (I have four), my children enjoying their families. Personally, I  would like to visit many new places. Of course, I plan to continue to work in my Latin community. Now that my children are grown and stable, I will focus more on the families of the Hispanic community. This is my reason to live.

The photo is from a family vacation in Michigan. The only thing that is recurring in our family is Michigan, because that’s where we go every summer to a cabin and the beach. It’s a symbol of permanence because it’s the only thing that has not changed. Libby was in Kindergarten and Gabriel was in 4th grade.

We had a house fire and the whole neighborhood came together to help us recover. It was one of the reasons why we stayed in Nashville because we were starting to get a little bit frustrated with the city and feeling left out. People that we didn’t know came forward to help and be supportive. It was amazing how helpful people were. I realized then that people were there but they had a different way to be there. In Argentina you are in peoples’ faces to help but here it was more from a distance. At this point I decided to start a Spanish website and find other Latinos in the city. I then got into being a mentor at the Hispanic Achievers Program. It was all because of that fire and realizing after that fire that I belong here. We became more engaged and were volunteering for different things.

Besides being proud of my almost 30 year marriage and raising my two children with my wife some of my accomplishments include becoming the lead designer at Hart Freeland Roberts where I was the designer of some Nashville landmarks like the Howard Office Building, being elected to Metro Council (was the 1st Latino immigrant to get elected to any office), and having pushed for policies that benefited Nashville residents but didn’t leave anybody out.

All of us are kind of at a crossroads right now. Nashville feels like home. Long term I would like to get a flying car. Immediately, I am working at the Mayor’s office and my passion is democratizing building the city, to empower residents to make decisions about the city they live in regardless of who they are.

It’s been a long ride with a bunch of ups and downs, but by continuing to work and study hard we have gotten to where we are. Originally, my father came to the United States for work. Once our family got word that he liked it, we immigrated and my mother loved it. Throughout the last twenty years, my younger brother was born.  We have been able to establish a more financially stable home that would have been difficult to obtain in Mexico.

Graduating high school for me. And we are also proud of my brother who has been doing great in high school and is working on applying to colleges since he will be graduating in May.

I also hope that there will be a stable and progressive immigration reform where my future is not at risk.

Let’s talk about the photo from 20 years ago.  Where were you (all)? What events were happening during this time period of your life?

I came to live with my husband and we undertook this adventure alone. When I arrived then we had recently gotten together.  We were in a relationship in Mexico, he was 14 years old then and  we separated,  but he kept looking for me and with communication I came later. In that picture I had recently arrived.

Let’s talk about the present. What does it look like today? How have the last 20 years gone by to now?

We see ourselves as stable parents, entrepreneurs and full of experiences. These last few years we have experienced joy, adventure, and dreams that we continue to work on and of course also ups and downs, but from which we learn and improve.

What  personal or family achievements have you (all) obtained during these last 20 years?

Personal triumphs are learning English, the customs  and losing the fear of staying alone with my family in this country, and our family achievement is the JJJ service family business. When I arrived in 2004 there were a lot less  Hispanics,  so there weren’t a lot of people who spoke Spanish. We struggled  a lot, and that was one of my achievements, that I learned English. I can defend myself and understand the language.

Let’s talk about the photo from 20 years ago.  Where were you (all)? What events were happening during this time period of your life?

Unfortunately we don’t have many photographs of the three of us from 20 years ago. We do remember a picture we took at Chuck E. Cheese since it was our first time going and with a lot of effort we were able to go and Natan was so excited he couldn’t decide what to play. We had just moved after three months to a duplex with nothing more than a set of sheets, and money was barely enough to pay for our expenses. My wife works in cleaning at a school and I do fencing.

Let’s talk about the present. What does it look like today? How have the last 20 years gone by to now?

We have grown in all areas of our lives; taking advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to us, growing in knowledge and gratitude to this country that has welcomed us and above all to God because he has always blessed us and cared for us.

In 2002 I lived in Texas, I was in a situation were I had a partner but then separated and then I said: I am going to go very far, then I said I am going to look for a city where there’s a lot of work, where life is not so expensive and where there’s not so much crime. I decided to put my stuff in a U-Haul and come.

Let’s talk about the present. What does it look like today? How have the last 20 years gone by to now?

Many changes in work culture but as well as new experiences.  I said I’m going to continue doing what I know, cleaning houses; I’m going to put an advertisement that states I clean houses in the newspaper, and that’s how I began. In 2019 after taking a Negocios Prosperos business course,  I saw how important it was to have it registered. I registered it and opened it. Now we are 12 immigrant women. It has been the basis of many efforts, much commitment,  and I thank Conexion Americas and all the tools that have been given to us; I have grasped them and it has been another lesson learned to keep climbing the mountain.

What  personal or family achievements have you (all) obtained during these last 20 years?

My biggest achievement is having a business of my own.  All of this is thanks to the people around me and my commitment to myself and desire to grow in all aspects;  because I continue to attempt to speak English, and I came with a dream and I managed it. Two of my children graduated from college.

Let’s talk about the photo from 20 years ago.  Where were you (all)? What events were happening during this time period of your life?

Some of my father’s brothers first came to Nashville and it was because of them that we came. They lent us money for the passage and so we had a facility because they supported us. When we came in 1999, there were very few hispanics and not many things to do. Now, Nashville is expanding, it is very big. During that time, since we came without money, there was a lot of work,  and we came to have three jobs.

Let’s talk about the present. What does it look like today? How have the last 20 years gone by to now?

We struggled to pay for university. The bracelets and rings that my wife had were sold to pay for school. When Conexion Americas announced that they were an organization that helped Latin people, Oscar was in Overton High School. They started to visit the school and  there my son was one of the firsts, which put him in advantage because you see when they finish high school they start to want to help them. They talked to my boy and therefore a connection was made. I am the person who cleans and mows the lawn here at Casa Azafran since it was founded.  We saw when they built this building, there was nothing here, it was a wasteland, piles of dirt when they started building. We are very happy. We go to other places but we don’t like it. There is nothing more beautiful than Nashville. We are very humble but we have been able to thrive.

What  personal or family achievements have you (all) obtained during these last 20 years?

My son graduated college. He received a degree in International Business Administration. We have taught our children to be good people, they don’t have problemas.

Share a bit of how you see yourself in 20 years, plans, work, education, travel, etc.

My wife’s and I’s dreams, since we are older now, are to rest, our children will continue forward. Well now, as the saying goes, we see the harvest we sow. We tell my granddaughter that she has to study like her uncle.

Let’s talk about the photo from 20 years ago.  Where were you (all)? What events were happening during this time period of your life?

The picture is from 2003, in Indiana, we were celebrating my brother’s birthday, a year after our arrival in the United States. We arrived in Nashville, Tennessee because my dad, Hilario, lived in the state of Tennessee. He began emigrating to the United States on a work visa in 1997. In 2001, his work visa expired and did not want to return to Mexico out of fear that he would be denied a renewal due to 9/11. That was when my parents made the decision to come and live in the United States. We arrived and only stayed for a few months and then went to live in Elkhart, Indiana,  where my parents worked and my brother and I went to school.

Let’s talk about the present. What does it look like today? How have the last 20 years gone by to now?

We then had to return to Nashville in 2007 because labor decreased. My parents started working in a Barnes and Noble warehouse. In 2010 my dad decided to start a cleaning company called Yitzel Cleaning Service. While my parents worked in the mornings at the warehouse, during the afternoons, we would all go to clean houses. My brother and I went to school in the mornings and would help our parents with the company during the afternoons and weekends.

What  personal or family achievements have you (all) obtained during these last 20 years?

I graduated high school with honors and then went to college. It was not easy, since I was the first in my family to go to college. We were all learning about a new system. In 2014, my father’s company changed from interior cleaning to post construction, where he began to work with contractors. In 2015, I graduated college and started to work with my degree. I was able to buy my first house in 2017 and my parents bought theirs in 2019. In 2019, my husband and I began our own painting company, Perfect Contrast Painting Company.

Share a bit of how you see yourself in 20 years, plans, work, education, travel, etc.

In 10 years, we hope that our companies have expanded and have more employees in order to help more families. My oldest son would be 19 years old and my dream is that he, too, succeeds in life and be able to attend university along with my daughter (who is barely 11 months). We want to continue to motivate and be that voice to help others achieve their dreams.
